The Mod Squad – 3 Moves for Happy Hips
Welcome to the first episode of The Mod Squad! Today we are talking about the one thing that just about everybody complains about and that is our hips. So much of our day is spent sitting that you can understand why our hips need a little extra love and attention. Today’s video will walk you through 3 different stretches we can use to get some movement into our hips.
Fireplace. This is a yoga move that involves stacking one leg on top of the other. Start with placing the left leg on the mat, with the shin parallel to the edge, from here we put the right leg on top. We want to have the right knee over the left ankle and right ankle over the left knee. Repeat with the right leg on the bottom and left leg on top. Keep your chest tall and remember to BREATHE. See the video for options if this is not comfortable.
Thread the needle. Lying on your back bring your knees to a 45 degree angle and bring the right ankle on top of the left knee. Reach through the hole in your legs and gently begin to pull the left thigh back toward your chest. You can use the right elbow to gently press on the right knee to deepen the stretch, and as always BREATHE. Repeat on the left side.
Pigeon. Starting in Table Top, bring the right foot between the hands and begin to walk the foot over to the side bringing the shin parallel to the edge of the mat. Sometimes the flexibility is just not there so bring the heel down toward the inner thigh, you will still get a great stretch. Extend the left leg out behind you and square the hips to the mat. If you want a deeper stretch come down to the forearms and walk the arms out. Repeat on the left. And as always, BREATHE.
So there you have it, 3 moves to add to your routine to keep your hips happy.
