H2O for You

H2O for You

You may already know this but water makes up about 60% of our body weight. Without water life cannot exist. We can go weeks without food, but only 3-days without water!

Water plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function. It regulates body temperature, aids in digestion, helps remove toxins and protects our brain and joints. Drinking plenty of water can help keep our body healthy and functioning, as it’s highest ability.

Most of us are unaware when our bodies lack adequate water.
What are some of the warning signs?

Most of us are unaware when our bodies lack adequate water.
What are some of the warning signs?

  • Headaches – dehydration reduces flow of oxygen and blood to the brain
  • Daytime Fatigue – lack of water is the #1 trigger. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty concentrating
  • Dry Mouth – lack of water produces less saliva which can lead to stinky breath
  • Constipation
  • Sudden Food Cravings – the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. Grab a glass of water before a snack!
  • Decrease in Bathroom Visits – a healthy amount of water = 4-6 visits a day
  • Joint Pain – healthy joints contain 80% of water alone, when our body lacks water our bones begin to grind against each other

The amount of water you need to drink usually depends on a number of factors, such as the climate in which you live, how physically active you are, and your overall health.

I have to admit, I am the worse at drinking water. I don’t love it but have been making it a priority especially with the warmer weather. My day starts with a large glass of water (room temperature) and I try to drink one full glass of water before every meal. I carry a water bottle with me wherever I go and make sure my diet is full of water-rich fruits and vegetables.

A few of my go-to’s to help spruce up the flavor:

  • Add fresh fruit – citrus fruits are my favorites especially lime and lemons but I am also digging cucumbers and fresh mint as well.
  • Make it bubbly – my day consists of at least 1-2 carbonated waters – I love any flavored LaCroix, it’s like my little after meal treat.
  • Tea – my goal is no coffee past noon so Iced Tea has become my new staple for an afternoon pick-me up when needed.
  • Drink Mixes – Nuun energy tabs or black-cherry limeade packs by Truelime are a quick way to add some flavor when in a pinch and they’re easy to throw in bag/purse.

So next time you skip reaching for your water bottle, remember that drinking water regularly can help you to lose weight, think better, stay in a better mood, prevent disease, and more.
