I Should or I Must … You Choose ….

A dear friend of mine sent me this article last week. The difference between what we “should” do (or what we feel we owe people or what others around us think is appropriate for our lives) and what we MUST do ( our calling our passion and our mission)

He asks a good question in the article that really hit home …

“What if who we are and what we do become one and the same?”

What if we could do what we should do and at the same time make it what we must do!

There are two types of characteristics that drive us:

1 being passionate – this makes you excited, energetic, and enthusiastic about what you are doing, but it only gets you so far.

2. Having Purpose: This is the ticket. Having purpose is what makes you never quit, never take no for an answer, never give up, and when the going gets tough you get tougher!

When you have a purpose you feel it is your duty to make your craft happen. There is no other option then making your passion successful day in and day out.

The article then has you write two obituaries. The first was the life that had purpose or must.

The second version was the obituary was the should— a conventional, ordinary, pleasant life.

When the writer did the exercise herself she was startled and realized things in her “should” life must change to “must”!

I know it can be scary to take that “leap of faith” into the unknown and unfamiliar but the satisfaction and fulfillment you will receive will be worth every bit of fear, insecurity, and hard work and/or roadblocks you will encounter.

My challenge for you today is to write down your obituaries and see where you are at?

Are you livening your “should” life … or are your living your “must”?
