If I Could Do It Over…

Every year in January I see the same thing in the fitness world. We make resolutions, get really fired up, very focused and say to ourselves, “This is REALLY going to be my year!” And a few weeks/months go by and life finds a way of settling back to the way it has always been and those white hot goals are once again broken. So many people have hopes and dreams that resolve to lose weight, to spend more quality time with family, to increase income and to create a better life for themselves and their family, but very few end up succeeding.

It is no secret to what it takes to succeed with whatever your resolution’s are, we all understand that without discipline, massive action and a high level of commitment, it won’t stick.

The traditional approach to achieving your new goals with the new year is to look ahead, plan, promise and be persistence. But then I read about all the people who don’t succeed with their ‘new year’s resoulutions’ and how many people continue to set the same goals year after year.

So what if we took a different approach this year? What if before we planned ahead and set goals we looked backwards first? Hint: It may help us move forward and minimize if not eliminate mistakes we continue to make.

Dr. Anthony Capolo, did a sociological study in which 50 people over the age of 95 were asked one question…

“If you could live your life over again, what would you do differently?”

It was an open ended question with quite a few different answers that came back. However, three answers constantly emerged.

*I would reflect more.
*I would risk more.
*I would do more things that would live on after I am dead.

Lets say for fun. You could write a letter to a much younger you. A 10, 20 or 30 years younger you.

In this letter you could tell yourself all the things you could have done and should of done.

Knowing what you know today, knowing what you have learned from all your life experiences, and you had the opportunity to write yourself this letter…

What would you say?

What life lessons have you learned that you wish you would have known back then?

What do you think would happen if you knew what you know today, back then, and how could you life be different today?

Write this letter to yourself in the comments. It can be fitness, career, relationship or anything life related. It’s fair game today in the comments.
