What is An EMOTM?

We were having a great discussion on Saturday with some of our members of CDA (Coach’s Development Academy) with the purpose of the infamous “EMOTM”.

You have all come into class and read it on the O’Board with big Capital letters but what exactly does it mean and what is it’s purpose for me as an athlete?

First off EMOTM stands for: Every Minute on the Minute. For example if you have EMOTM for 5 Minutes 5 Man Makers then you will do 5 man makers and rest for the remainder of the minute and then proceed to do 5 man makers on minute 2 and so on and so fourth until the 5 minutes is up.

The purpose of the EMOTM is to create urgency and intensity. Mentally you are working for the rest by thinking “The faster I go the more rest I will get”.

EMOTM’s are typically low reps like 10 Toe to Bar or 12 cal row, 5 Back Squat etc … which gives you the athlete a really good opportunity to work on form and technique. It will also take you out of your comfort zone and try a harder version of the exercise or row faster than you typically do etc …

EMOTM’s are also controlled which is usually a safer environment as well. It also really allows the athlete to have a little recovery time so they can be explosive again on the next minute.

The last thing is EMOTM’s can really take that heart rate up like a tabata rep scheme. The more the heart rate is up that equates to the more output your expending (i.e. you are kicking your own butt)!

I am the type of person that really likes to have reasoning behind what I am doing. If I have a clear intention of what the purpose is I am able to really work to the best of my abilities.

So next time you see an EMOTM pick which one of the three areas you want to work on in order to improve your fitness.
