Why We Came Back to the SoDak…

Why We Came Back to the SoDak…

Life is short. And for the Mello’s it seems like everything is in fast forward!

Continuing from last week’s post, “How It ALL Started..”

After the sale of the gym Annie and I looked at each other and said, “What the hell do we do now?”

“What should we do next?”
“Should we travel around Europe?”
“Move to the east coast?”
Go back to home to Cali?”

We decided to go back to our homeland of Southern California.

Right away I called my very good friend (who I actually got CrossFit Level 1 certified with) to see if he had any ideas. I wanted to stay in FITness and coaching but I did not want to own another gym at the time. I wasn’t ready.

My friend mentioned that he had a friend who was about to open up a CrossFit Affiliate in Glendale, CA. He introduced me to him. We met, we hit it off and I was back in the game.

So in March 2011 I was right back into coaching for another affiliate from Day 1. It was a crazy situation going from owning an affiliate to being the 2nd in command. Usually you would think it was the other way around: working for someone before going on to own your own gym.

It was a very cool scenario that taught me a lot. I saw things that I wouldn’t have noticed if I was running the show. I was in a position to think and see how my coaches may have thought and felt. I also knew what the owner was thinking because I had been in his shoes not too long ago. I got to start with and watch another community grow organically from half way across the country all over again. I saw the same relationships being built and then I saw the same results with the physical as well as emotional transformations… It was really cool!

The Glendale gym was growing almost exactly on par with the previous gym in SF, kinda Déjà vu like. And I was loving every minute of it. I got to express the same passion, intensity and relationship building/coaching that I did with the gym in SF. And with all of those components that were established over those 2 years I realized that I was born to own a gym once more.

As 2013 hit we experienced many challenges on our path back. It felt like we got the rug pulled out from under us in so many different ways. Leaving a great, growing and thriving CF community, to moving twice in 6 months (once half way across the country), to not having a gym to operate out of when trying to start a gym and much more. Needless to say, 2013 has been quite a growing experience for Annie and I.

Our gym plans were definitely set to open in SoCal. But with parking variances, city permits, expanding our search, to reverting back, to life planning, to twists and turns we never thought about, we got a real chance to take a really hard look at our lives and each other to see what we are made of. What did we truly wanted out of life? Through the setbacks and challenges that we faced, we got a very rare opportunity to have the world stop for a while and got to find out what is important to us.

When it was all said and done we broke down our lives and asked ourselves “What do we really want for our family, career, friends, lifestyle, future…” With much thought and prayer we officially decided that what we ultimately wanted was right back to where we left it 2.5 years ago… Sioux Falls!
