You Gotta Earn It!

You Gotta Earn It!

Chris and I had a good discussion a while back about clients / kids who want to lift weights but are overweight, lack mobility or missing something they need to properly execute lifts. I’m mainly talking about a barbell here.

The Olympic lifts are the sexy lifts. The clean, the snatch… once you get started with them, you want to do them all of the time! Also popular are the bench, squat, deadlift, press. Let’s be honest, it’s easier to walk into a gym and start back squatting (with a 1/4 squat) than it is to run a mile. Don’t get me wrong, when you are legit squatting it’s a totally different story!

So what if you can’t run, jump or do a push-up? Have you really earned the right to lift heavy weights? When I’m working with the kids, I like to encourage them to master body weight and light lifting (kettlebells/dumbbells) before they tackle the barbell. Does it always work? No. That’s a BIG no. They gravitate towards the barbell first. Rather than forcing them to skip the barbell altogether, I then add finishers to their lifting. Why can’t they do a push-up or an air squat? Mobility, overweight? Time to stretch and do some cardio.

The same applies to adults. You have to earn the right to squat heavy weight! Clean up your diet, add in some cardio and make sure your form is spot on with lighter lifts. Everything look good? Let’s add some weight. Just make sure you track your numbers. Now watch the magic happen 💥
