The other day, I was asked by one of my clients “What keeps me at CPM?”
First and foremost it’s a place that allows me to do what I love and that is helping people. I am very passionate about health and fitness and I have found that the gym environment allows me to thrive both physically and mentally.
Secondly, it’s the people. I love my tribe and I have some pretty amazing mentors who are always pushing me to get better. Keeping myself surrounded with like-minded people keeps me in my happy place.
Thirdly, I like variety and as I pass yet another birthday I can truly say I am in better shape now then in my 30’s.
So what’s my secret?
Consistency, Consistency, Consistency
Prioritize your health and fitness. Set aside time to get to the gym and stick to your schedule. Stop relying on motivation. There are days I don’t feel like exercising but I do it anyways. Avoid making excuses and make it happen.
Keep it FUN!
Change your attitude and embrace the struggle. The struggle makes us grow. It makes you better. Struggle is what forces change. There is something to be said about doing things that are hard, especially in the group setting. It brings people together and can make the suffering funJ. The day you stop having fun is the day you are in jeopardy of quitting.
Know yourself, push yourself, but be realistic in what your body is capable of. Understand your strengths and weaknesses. There may be days you need to scale back to best fit your needs. I can tell you from past experience that my results have not come from ignoring my body but as a result of listening. Remember that mobility, active recovery and sleep are just as important as the training you are doing.
Eat WELL… but not obsessively.
Balance is the key with nutrition. Obsessive eating patterns are neither fun nor sustainable. Keep it simple. Don’t let food be a stressor. Eat more veggies, add protein at every meal and eat less sugar and processed stuff. I don’t believe in depriving myself of anything. I like treats every once in a while, I am human, but it’s about moderation. When you choose the right foods your body works better.
Aging doesn’t cause a decline in fitness; rather, a decline in fitness causes aging.
