Summer is in full swing and as many of the restrictions are being lifted we are all dashing to get out of the house whether its to our favorite restaurant or meeting up with friends for some cocktails on the patio. I have found myself doing my fair share of socialization lately.😁

So what are some strategies to help when you want to go off-roading a bit but not too much to undo all the hard work you have put into your healthy habits?

Limiting portion in advance

So I have a few weakness, one of them being chips and salsa. How many of you have told yourself just one more and then all of a sudden you look down and the bowl is empty. Set yourself up for success by grabbing a desired, yet decent, amount of chips you feel good about and stick to it!

Planning ahead is huge. Most menus’ can be found online. By deciding in advance what you will order can prevent temptation and frustration.

The more GOOD food you eat, leaves less room for the bad

This one is as simple as it sounds. Load up your meal with the goods = protein, veggies and good fats. Eat until you are content but not stuffed. I try to stick with the 75-minute rule. If you still want those fries, glass of wine, desserts 75-minutes after your meal, then go for it but most likely that is not the case.

If you Booze (too much) you will lose

Well I can honestly tell you that summer brings out the wild side of me.😜 I definitely consume more alcohol in the summer vs. winter. We all know that too much alcohol is not great for your health, recovery or for our quest of that summer booty but if we choose to consume here are few things to take into consideration.

  • Drink Earlier – get your booze in as far away from bedtime as you can.
  • Ditch the foo-foo drinks. Much of the problem with drinking is not the booze but all the crap…AKA sugar that comes with it. Go for clear liquor. Tequila or vodka are my top picks!

When you do Overindulge, make it up with something good

When my willpower loses and I go overboard with eating the “wrong” kinds of foods, I usually try to rectify by canceling out the bad with something good. If I ate fried foods, indulged in alcohol/desserts, I will follow that up with eating some learn protein, fruits/veggies to help balance everything to get back on track.

Try to enjoy all the beauty summer has to offer and don’t stress. Health is a journey and it is all about finding a balance that is right for you. No one is asking you to be perfect and what fun is perfect anyway? Just do what you can, with what you’ve got, wherever you are and be happy doing it.
